Do I need a visa for Austria from Congo?
Discover visa requirements for your trip
Yes. Nationals of the Republic of the Congo must obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to travel to Austria for tourism.
The Republic of the Congo is not among the countries exempt from Schengen visas, and Austria is a member of that area. Congolese travellers must therefore apply for a Type C visa before departure. It allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area.
Do you need a visa?
Yes. For a short tourist stay in Austria, citizens of the Republic of the Congo need a Schengen Type C visa. Austria must be your main destination — the country where you spend the most nights — or your first point of entry if you spend equal time in several Schengen states.
How and where to apply
Applications are lodged at the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for the Republic of the Congo, or at its external provider (VFS Global, BLS or TLScontact). Booking an appointment, submitting the file and providing fingerprints are done in person. As Austria does not always have a mission in Brazzaville, check which post handles applications from Congolese residents.
Documents and fees
Gather a valid passport, the completed Schengen form, compliant photos, proof of accommodation, an itinerary or bookings, evidence of means, and travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000. The visa fee is generally €90 for an adult; confirm the amount with the Austrian mission.
Processing and tips
Processing usually takes 15 to 45 days, so file early — up to six months before travel and at least 15 working days ahead. Make sure your itinerary, accommodation and declared funds are consistent. Also check health requirements, in particular yellow fever vaccination, on the official source.
Common mistakes
A classic mistake is applying through another Schengen country when Austria is the main destination, which triggers a refusal. Watch out too for insurance below the €30,000 threshold, unconfirmed bookings, insufficient proof of funds, and filing too late to leave time for additional documents.
