Do I need a visa for New Caledonia from Algeria?

Visa required — and a Schengen visa is NOT enough
New Caledonia is a French territory, but it sits OUTSIDE the Schengen Area. That's the classic trap: an Algerian traveller needs a specific French “overseas” visa, and a standard Schengen visa does not allow entry to New Caledonia.
The Schengen-visa trap
A Schengen “C” visa covers mainland France, NOT New Caledonia. You need a French short-stay visa carrying the overseas territorial endorsement (form CERFA 15934-01), which is different from a Schengen visa. Apply via France-Visas / VFS Global at the French consular service competent for Algeria (Algiers, Oran, Annaba).
Transiting via mainland France
If your flight stops in mainland France, you will also need Schengen entry/transit rights for that leg. Check your itinerary: a visa valid only for New Caledonia does not cover a Schengen transit.
Documents and health
Passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond departure (allow 6 months to be safe, some airlines require it), 2 blank pages. A yellow-fever certificate is not required when arriving directly from Algeria.
Best time to travel
New Caledonia has a tropical climate with a hot, humid season from November to April and a drier, cooler season from May to October. The optimal time to visit is generally during the dry season, from May to October, to enjoy more stable weather conditions. It is advisable to avoid the humid season if outdoor activities are a priority.
Main arrival airports
The main international airport in New Caledonia is La Tontouta Airport, located near Nouméa, the capital city. It handles international flights from various destinations. Depending on your entry point, you may also consider other entry points such as secondary airports or ports, but La Tontouta remains the primary hub for international travelers.
Documents to prepare
Travelers should have a valid passport for the duration of their stay. It is also recommended to prepare a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation or resources, and travel insurance covering the entire stay. Additional supporting documents may be required depending on the traveler’s specific situation.
