Do I need a visa for Guadeloupe from Senegal?

A specific French 'overseas' visa is required — a Schengen visa is NOT valid for Guadeloupe.
Here is the trap that catches many travellers: Guadeloupe is a French overseas department and region (DROM), so it is French and EU territory — but it is NOT part of the Schengen Area. For a Senegalese national, who needs a visa for France (Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806), this changes everything: a standard Schengen visa does not open Guadeloupe. You need a French short-stay visa specifically valid for the overseas territories. And the reverse is just as true.
Why a Schengen visa is not enough
The official portal Service-Public.gouv.fr is unambiguous: 'You cannot get a Schengen visa because overseas France is not part of the Schengen area' — you must apply for 'a specific short-stay visa' for the overseas destination. The limitation works both ways: this specific 'overseas' visa does not, on its own, allow entry into the Schengen Area, i.e. mainland France. The Ministry of the Interior confirms it: Schengen rules apply only to the European territory of France, and to visit both the mainland and an overseas territory you need a visa for each. In practice, for Guadeloupe you apply for a short-stay visa territorially valid for the DROM-CTOM, using the dedicated form CERFA 15934-01 'Court séjour DROM-CTOM' (which also covers Martinique, Guyane, Réunion, Mayotte, Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, etc.).
Applying from Senegal
The process goes through the France-Visas portal: you create your file online selecting Guadeloupe as the destination, then submit it in person at the VFS Global centre in Dakar, under the authority of the Consulate General of France in Dakar. Biometrics (photo and fingerprints) are taken at the centre; children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints. Prepare the CERFA 15934-01 form, a valid and recent passport, a photo, travel medical insurance, and proof of funds, accommodation and return travel. As a guide, a short-stay visa fee is €90 (€45 for ages 6-12), plus VFS service charges paid in local currency — confirm the amounts on France-Visas at submission as they change. Average processing time is around 15 days, but apply well ahead.
Yellow fever: expect to need the certificate
Senegal carries a yellow-fever transmission risk (the eastern region is high-risk), so the vaccination certificate is routinely requested from travellers coming from Senegal. For entry to the French overseas territories, health rules may require a yellow-fever certificate from travellers arriving from an at-risk country: plan to have it. The WHO international certificate of vaccination has been valid for life since 11 July 2016. Because the precise requirement for Guadeloupe can vary, confirm before departure with the French Consulate in Dakar or Institut Pasteur de Dakar, and get vaccinated early enough (valid 10 days after the injection).
Best time to travel
Guadeloupe has a tropical climate with a dry season from December to May, making it the ideal period for outdoor activities and beach visits. The rainy season occurs from June to November, characterized by increased rainfall and the potential for tropical storms. Planning trips outside the rainy season can lead to a more comfortable stay.

The primary international airports in Guadeloupe are Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport (Aéroport Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes) located in Les Abymes, and Marie-Galante Airport. These airports serve mainly regional and international flights. They are the main entry points for travelers arriving from abroad.

Travelers should have a valid passport, round-trip or onward tickets, and supporting documents such as proof of accommodation. It is also advisable to carry travel insurance covering health and liability. Checking specific entry requirements before departure is recommended.
