Schengen C visa required — and with no Maltese consulate in Togo, plan the detour.
Malta is a full member of the Schengen Area. The Togolese passport is listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, so a short-stay Schengen visa (type C) is required for any tourist trip, even a single day. The upside: once issued, the visa opens the whole Schengen Area, not just Malta. The real challenge is logistical — Malta has almost no representation in West Africa — and medical, since Togo is a yellow-fever country.
The Schengen C visa in practice
You apply for a short-stay visa allowing up to 90 days within any 180-day period. You need a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen Area, with at least two blank pages. The standard file includes the form and a biometric photo, travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 valid across the whole Schengen Area, proof of accommodation, proof of funds and a return ticket. A Malta-issued visa lets you travel the entire Schengen Area, but you must apply at your main-destination country (longest stay, or failing that the first country of entry): only choose Malta if it is genuinely your main destination. As a guide, the standard adult Schengen visa fee is €90 since 11 June 2024 (€45 for ages 6-12, free below), excluding the service provider's charges — confirm at the time of application as amounts change.
Where to apply from Togo
This is the trickiest point: Malta has no embassy or consulate in Togo. Its only resident mission in West Africa is the High Commission of Malta in Accra (Ghana), backed by a VFS Global centre. Two scenarios are possible and must be verified before you travel anywhere: either you apply via the VFS Global centre / Maltese mission in Accra if its jurisdiction covers Togo residents, or Malta is represented locally by another Schengen state (in West Africa, France sometimes represents Malta for short stays). Assume nothing: contact the High Commission of Malta in Accra or VFS Global, or check Malta's missions page, to confirm where and how to submit your biometric file. Budget the time and cost of a possible trip outside Togo.
Yellow fever: keep your yellow card
Togo is a high-risk yellow-fever-endemic country; the WHO recommends vaccination from 9 months of age. Malta and the Schengen Area do not require the vaccine on entry, but keep your international certificate of vaccination (yellow card) safe: you will need it returning to Togo and in transit, as many countries demand proof of yellow-fever vaccination from travellers who have stayed in an endemic zone. Since 2016 this certificate is valid for life. Get vaccinated well before departure (the certificate is only valid 10 days after the injection).
