In short

Thai nationals must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) before travelling to Belgium for tourism.

Thailand is not among the countries exempt from the Schengen visa. Thai travellers file a Type C Schengen visa application with the Belgian mission or its service provider (VFS Global) in Thailand before departure. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

Do you need a visa?

Yes. Thai citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) for a tourist stay in Belgium. If Belgium is your main destination or your first point of entry into the Schengen area, the application must be lodged with the Belgian authorities.

How and where to apply

Applicants book an appointment with the Embassy of Belgium or its partner application centre, VFS Global, in Bangkok. The file is prepared online, then in-person attendance is required to submit documents and give biometric fingerprints. Apply at most six months and at least 15 days before travel.

Documents and fees

Prepare a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure, a signed form, a recent photo, a return flight reservation, proof of accommodation, financial evidence and travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000. The visa fee is generally €90 for an adult, excluding the service provider's fee.

Processing and tips

Processing usually takes 15 to 45 days, so apply well ahead, particularly during school holidays and summer. Present a coherent itinerary and sufficient funds, and keep a full copy of your application.

Common mistakes

Refusals often stem from insufficient insurance, weak financial evidence or applying to the wrong Schengen country. Do not book non-refundable tickets before the visa is granted, and check the exact fee and document list on the official source.
