Visa for Costa Rica from Tunisia: price, documents and processing time 2026

A Tunisian holding a valid, multiple-entry visa (or residence) from the United States, Canada or a Schengen country can enter Costa Rica without a Costa Rican visa. The exact validity/stay conditions changed in late 2025 and checkers (Timatic) are not always up to date, confirm with your airline and the DGME before departure.

Without a third-country visa, the application must be pre-approved by the Restricted Visa Commission in San José (allow ~90 days). There is no Costa Rican embassy in Tunisia, so the request goes through the Costa Rican mission competent for the region.

The DGME officer decides the length of stay you are granted: it appears on the entry stamp, check it before leaving the counter, as the stamp is what counts, not the theoretical maximum. An onward or return ticket is required (airlines already check it at boarding) and proof of funds may be requested. Never overstay the stamped duration: an overstay complicates any future application in the region.

Passport valid 6 months, an onward/return ticket and sufficient funds. A yellow-fever certificate is only required if you arrive from, or transited, a yellow-fever-endemic country.

Then the application goes to the post accredited for Tunisia, often in a neighbouring capital, or to a state acting on its behalf. Confirm which post is competent with the official source before travelling to a third country to apply, a rejected file at the wrong counter costs the trip and the fee.

The regime follows your nationality, not where you live. If you reside in Tunisia but travel on another country's passport, the rule on this page is not yours. Filing usually still happens from your country of residence, at the post competent for it, but the requirement itself comes from your passport.

Travelling with a single-entry US or Schengen visa that has already been used, or one expiring during your stay: the exemption relies on a visa that is still valid and usable. Relying solely on the airline's check-in system, verification databases are not always up to date with the late-2025 rules, so arrive early with the official DGME texts printed. And forgetting the yellow fever certificate after transiting an endemic country: a South American or African layover can be enough to make it mandatory.
