Summary
IDR 500,000 for 30 days on arrival or online, IDR 1,000,000 for the C1 up to 180 days: what European travellers need to know before Bali, and which websites to avoid.
Travellers from the UK, Ireland and most of Europe need a visa to enter Indonesia, even for a week in Bali. The good news is that no embassy visit is required. The most common option is the visa on arrival (VOA): IDR 500,000 for 30 days, paid at the airport counter or applied for online before departure as an e-VOA. For a longer trip, the C1 tourist visa costs IDR 1,000,000 and gives 60 days, extendable up to 180.
This guide is based on the rules published by Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration and by the UK Foreign Office, checked on 23 October 2026. The rules for each nationality are on the pages for British travellers and Irish travellers.
Who needs a visa for Indonesia?
The UK and EU countries such as France, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland are on Indonesia's official list of countries eligible for a visa on arrival. They are not on the visa-free list, so a paid visa is required in every case.
This visa, called B1 by the Indonesian authorities, covers tourism, visiting family or friends, transit, and attending meetings, conventions or trade fairs. It does not allow you to sell goods or services, or to be paid by an Indonesian person or company. The Foreign Office adds that it is not suitable for volunteering or for creating commercial or sponsored online content: an influencer on assignment needs a different visa.
Visa on arrival or e-VOA: one visa, two ways to get it
The VOA and the e-VOA are the same B1 visa at the same price: IDR 500,000 for a stay of 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry. It can be extended once, for another 30 days, giving 60 days in total.
On arrival, you pay at the bank counter in the immigration area of the airport or seaport, in cash or by card, then receive a sticker in your passport and an electronic entry stamp. Most major airports and seaports issue it, including Bali.
Online, the e-VOA is issued on the official portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The visa is valid for 90 days from issue: you must enter Indonesia within that window, and your 30 days only start when you cross the border. The Foreign Office recommends applying at least a week before you travel, and makes an important point: the visa must be approved before you arrive. A visa approved after you have entered is not valid, and you could be treated as overstaying.
The e-VOA has two practical advantages: you skip the counter queue, and you can extend it entirely online. A VOA bought at the airport is extended at the immigration office nearest to where you are staying.
The C1 tourist visa, for stays of up to six months
If you are staying longer than 60 days, the VOA will not do. The C1 visa is designed for that:
- IDR 1,000,000, paid online;
- 60 days from arrival, single entry;
- extendable several times, online, up to 180 days in total;
- valid for 90 days after issue to enter the country;
- processed within five working days of payment.
No sponsor is needed. You provide your passport biodata page (valid for at least six months), a colour photo taken within the last year, and bank statements for the last three months showing funds of at least USD 2,000 or the equivalent. The C1 must be obtained before you travel, on the same portal: it is not available at the airport counter.
In practice: under 30 days, the VOA is the simplest and cheapest option. Between 30 and 60 days, both work, but the VOA requires an extension in Indonesia. Beyond 60 days, only the C1 fits.
Passport, return ticket and the All Indonesia form
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive and, according to the Foreign Office, have at least two blank pages. You also need a return ticket or a ticket to another country.
Since 1 October 2025, every passenger arriving from abroad must complete the All Indonesia declaration, which combines immigration, customs, health and quarantine in a single form. It is filled in on allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app of the same name, within the three days before arrival. It is free: a website charging for it is not the official one.
Bali adds its own rule. The province charges foreign visitors a tourist levy, separate from the visa, payable online on the official site lovebali.baliprov.go.id or on arrival. The amount is shown on that site. Holders of a residence permit (KITAS, KITAP), a student visa or a family visa are exempt on proof.
Extending your stay, and never overstaying
Extensions must be made before the end of the first 30 days: online for an e-VOA, at an immigration office for a paper VOA. Your passport must still be valid for at least six months.
Overstaying is taken very seriously. The Foreign Office cites a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day of overstay, and warns that overstaying or using the wrong visa can lead to prosecution, detention and deportation at your own cost, with a re-entry ban.
One lesser-known rule: if you stay in private accommodation, your presence must be registered at the nearest police station. Hotels register guests automatically.
Traps to avoid
Intermediary websites. Searching for "Bali e-VOA" brings up sites that imitate the official portal and charge several times the official fee for the same application. The only official portal is evisa.imigrasi.go.id: an official Indonesian government site always ends in ".go.id".
Fake agents. The Foreign Office reports rising visa scams in Indonesia: travellers have paid agents who never obtained the visa, or obtained the wrong one, and ended up overstaying. Apply and extend yourself, on the portal.
Validity versus stay. The 90 days of e-VOA validity are the window to enter the country. The 30 days are the length of your stay. They are two different things.
The wrong visa. The VOA is a visit visa. Work, paid services and sponsored content fall under other categories, each listed on the official portal.
