Which African passport travels most freely in 2026? We analysed our entry-requirements database (the short-stay tourist regime of 198 destinations, compiled from the Wikipedia articles on visa policies, then corrected against official sources where they differ) to rank every passport on the continent by the number of destinations reachable without a visa obtained in advance (visa exemption or visa on arrival).

What the ranking reveals
Seychelles and Mauritius are well ahead of the rest of the continent: 124 and 114 destinations, against 88 for South Africa in third place. Conversely, the bottom of the table almost exactly matches the list of countries in prolonged crisis. Embassies close their counters long before borders close.
The middle of the table tells another story: the rise of regional free-movement areas. ECOWAS guarantees visa-free movement between its member states, which gives West African passports a common base of visa-free destinations. The African Union is pushing a continental free-movement protocol which, if widely ratified, would reshuffle this ranking profoundly.
The eVisa revolution
In October 2026, an African passport unlocks on average 42 eVisa destinations, a visa obtained online without visiting an embassy; for passports at the bottom of the ranking, that is more than visa exemptions and visas on arrival combined.
This is the most encouraging figure in our barometer: where visa exemption remains a diplomatic privilege, the eVisa is spreading for everyone.
How does Africa compare globally?
Seychelles, Africa's top passport with 124 destinations reachable without a prior visa, ranks 53rd worldwide, far behind the United Arab Emirates (154), Singapore (153) and Malaysia (152), which lead the October 2026 ranking.
| World rank | Passport | Visa-free | Visa on arrival | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | United Arab Emirates | 125 | 29 | 154 |
| 2 | Singapore | 130 | 23 | 153 |
| 3 | Malaysia | 124 | 28 | 152 |
| 4 | South Korea | 113 | 35 | 148 |
| 4 | Japan | 113 | 35 | 148 |
| 6 | Luxembourg | 120 | 26 | 146 |
| 6 | France | 120 | 26 | 146 |
| 6 | Belgium | 120 | 26 | 146 |
| 6 | Spain | 119 | 27 | 146 |
| 6 | Ireland | 113 | 33 | 146 |
Sixteen passports are tied in 6th place with 146 destinations; the table shows five of them. Africa's top passport, Seychelles, ranks 53rd worldwide on this measure, and 63rd (tied) in our world ranking, which also counts e-visas (161 destinations). The gap with the global top three (United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia) remains considerable: 28 to 30 destinations.
This barometer only counts visa exemptions and visas on arrival. Our world passport ranking, updated every quarter, also counts e-visas and compares the French passport with those of French-speaking Africa.
Methodology
The IziVisas barometer counts, across 198 destinations as of October 15, 2026, those reachable without a prior visa (visa exemption or visa on arrival), based on visa policies compiled from Wikipedia and corrected against official sources.
This barometer is computed from the IziVisas database, which aggregates, for each destination, the short-stay tourist entry regime applicable to every nationality: each destination's visa policy, compiled from the Wikipedia articles on visa policies, then corrected against official sources (ministries, e-visa portals) where they differ. 198 destinations had published data on the data cut-off date, October 15, 2026, the same as the October 2026 edition of our world ranking. The "score" counts destinations reachable without a prior visa: visa exemption + visa on arrival. Territories without their own passport are excluded.
Visa regimes change constantly: for any travel decision, always check the up-to-date page for your route on IziVisas or with official sources.
