In short

Chinese passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Norway as tourists. It allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

This guide is for travellers of Chinese nationality planning a trip to Norway. Although Norway is not an EU member, it fully applies the Schengen rules, so a visa must be obtained before departure. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) publishes the official requirements.

Do you need a visa?

China does not enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area, of which Norway is part. Chinese citizens must therefore apply for a Type C visa before travelling. When Norway is your main destination or first point of entry, the Norwegian authorities are responsible for the application.

How and where to apply

Applications are lodged with the Norwegian embassy or consulate general in China through the authorised provider (usually VFS Global) in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities. First create an online application on the UDI portal, pay the fee, book an appointment, then attend in person to give your biometric data.

Documents and fees

The visa fee is normally EUR 90 for an adult (reduced for ages 6–12). Gather a passport valid at least three months beyond your intended departure, a compliant photo, travel insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, proof of accommodation in Norway, an itinerary, return tickets and evidence of funds (bank statements, employment letter).

Processing and tips

Processing usually takes 15–45 days; you may apply up to six months before and no later than 15 days before travel. VFS appointment slots can be fully booked during Chinese holidays (Lunar New Year, Golden Week), so plan ahead and check the current document checklist.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes include applying to the wrong Schengen country when Norway is not the main destination, underinsuring, submitting unconfirmed hotel or flight bookings, or providing weak financial evidence. Any inconsistency in the file can lead to a refusal.
