Visa required - and WATCH OUT: a normal Schengen visa is NOT valid for the Faroes
The Faroe Islands are Danish territory, but they sit OUTSIDE the Schengen area, and here is the big misunderstanding that ruins trips: holding a valid Schengen visa does NOT give you the right to enter the Faroes. The Ecuadorian passport needs a visa, and that visa must explicitly state it is valid for the Faroe Islands. It is a single-line detail on the visa sticker that many people overlook.
The mistake that ruins the trip
A Schengen visa (including a Danish one) does not authorise entry to the Faroes or Greenland. On the visa sticker, in the remarks field, it must read 'Valid for the Faroe Islands'. If you do not request this explicitly, you can be refused entry even with a perfectly valid Schengen visa. This is the number-one thing to watch on this route.
How to obtain it
Apply through a Danish diplomatic mission (embassy/consulate or a centre processing Denmark's visas) or the Danish Immigration Service. The procedure is the same as a Schengen visa, and ONE single form lets you request both the Schengen visa and the Faroe-valid one at once, so you can combine both destinations. Confirm the competent Danish mission for Ecuador before you start.
The shortcut (if you live in the EU/Schengen)
Since 20 March 2026, an Ecuadorian who HOLDS a residence permit from Denmark or another Schengen country may enter the Faroes without an extra visa, carrying their physical residence card and a valid travel document. Important: this applies to RESIDENCE permits, not to a plain short-stay Schengen visa or a D visa. Verify with the Danish authorities.
Best time to travel
The Faroe Islands have an oceanic climate with moderate temperatures year-round. The period from May to September is generally the most suitable for visiting, offering milder weather and longer daylight hours. Winter months, from November to February, tend to be colder and wetter, with shorter days.
Main arrival airports
The primary international entry point to the Faroe Islands is Vágar Airport, located near Sørvágur, which handles most international flights. There is also a smaller airport in Sørvágur, but Vágar Airport is the main hub for international arrivals. Tórshavn, the capital, does not have an international airport but can be reached via domestic flights or ferries.
Documents to prepare
Travelers should carry a valid passport for the duration of their stay. It is advisable to have a copy of your return or onward ticket, along with proof of accommodation or resources. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation is recommended. Check if any additional documents are required based on your specific situation.
