Do I need a visa for Canada from Vietnam?

In short

Vietnamese passport holders need a Temporary Resident (visitor) Visa to enter Canada; they are not eligible for the eTA. The application is completed online before departure.

Vietnam is not among the countries whose nationals can travel to Canada on an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Tourism therefore requires a Temporary Resident Visa, commonly called a visitor visa. You apply online through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), followed by a biometrics appointment.

Do you need a visa?

Yes. Because Vietnam is not eTA-eligible, a Temporary Resident (visitor) Visa is mandatory for a tourist stay in Canada. The visa may be issued for a single entry or for multiple entries, at the immigration officer's discretion. It must be obtained before you board a flight to Canada.

How and where to apply

You apply online through the IRCC portal: create an account, complete the form and upload your supporting documents. After you submit, you receive an instruction letter to give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Track your file's progress directly from your online account.

Documents and fees

Prepare a valid passport, a compliant photo, proof of sufficient funds, a travel itinerary or booking, and evidence of your ties to Vietnam (employment, family, property) together with the purpose of your trip. A processing fee and a biometrics fee apply: check the exact, current amount on canada.ca, as we do not quote it here to avoid outdated information.

Processing and tips

Processing times vary with application volumes and your circumstances; consult IRCC's official processing-time tool before booking anything. Give your biometrics as soon as possible, because processing only truly begins once they are on file. A complete application, with strong evidence of ties and funds, lowers the chance of a request for additional documents.

Common mistakes

The most common error is assuming an eTA is enough: a Vietnamese passport needs a full visa. Many refusals stem from ties to the home country judged insufficient or from poorly documented finances — the officer must be satisfied you will leave. Do not skip the biometrics appointment, and never submit inaccurate documents, on pain of refusal and a possible future ban.
