In short

Vietnamese citizens must obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa to visit Norway. An ordinary Vietnamese passport has no visa exemption.

Norway applies the Schengen rules even though it is not an EU member. Vietnam is not among the visa-exempt nationalities, so a Vietnamese traveller must apply for a visa before departure. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area.

Do you need a visa?

Yes. Vietnamese nationals require a Schengen Type C visa for tourist travel to Norway. You apply to Norway when it is your main destination or your first point of entry into the Schengen area; otherwise apply to the country where you will spend most of your trip.

How and where to apply

Vietnamese applicants first register in the UDI Application Portal, complete the form, pay the fee, and then book an appointment with the designated outsourcing partner (often VFS Global) in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to submit documents and give biometrics. Confirm the responsible centre on udi.no and norway.no/vietnam.

Documents and fees

Gather a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure and issued within the last ten years, the UDI form, two biometric photos, confirmed accommodation and round-trip flights, proof of funds and employment, and travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000. The visa fee is normally €90 for an adult, excluding the partner's service charge. Confirm the amount at lodgement.

Processing and tips

Processing usually takes 15 to 45 days and can be longer in peak season. Lodge no earlier than six months and no later than 15 days before travel. A strong file — a precise itinerary, proof of stable employment and ties to Vietnam, and adequate funds — supports a quick, positive decision.

Common mistakes

The most common mistakes are missing or inadequate travel insurance, bank statements that are too tight, applying to the wrong country when Norway is not the main destination, and a passport that fails the three-month residual validity rule. Do not book non-refundable tickets before the visa is granted.
